Padel, a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, has experienced an extraordinary boom in recent decades. Its popularity has grown both in Spain and in other countries, becoming one of the most practiced sports activities today. In this article, we will explore the origin of padel and how it became known in Spain.

The origin of the padel

Padel was invented in Mexico in the 1962s by Enrique Corcuera, a businessman who was looking for a way to practice tennis in a smaller space. Corcuera designed a court with walls and a net in the middle, which allowed playing in a smaller space and with less physical demand than traditional tennis.

Over time, padel became popular in Mexico and in other Latin American countries, such as Argentina. In Argentina, padel acquired great relevance and became a widely practiced sport, with the creation of numerous courts and the organization of tournaments.

The arrival of padel in Spain

It was in the mid-1970s when padel began to take its first steps in Spain. The popularization of this sport is mainly attributed to Alfonso de Hohenlohe, a Spanish aristocrat and businessman. Hohenlohe discovered padel in Mexico and decided to take it to Spain.

In 1974, the first padel court was inaugurated at the Marbella Club, located on the Costa del Sol. This court, built according to the standards established by Corcuera, aroused great interest among the members of the club and the sport began to spread rapidly. .

From that moment on, padel spread throughout the country. The construction of new tracks and the organization of tournaments and competitions. They were essential for its dissemination. Also, the fact that padel could be practiced by people of all ages and skill levels contributed to its popularity.

The rise of padel in Spain

In recent decades, padel has experienced unstoppable growth in Spain. Numerous sports facilities dedicated exclusively to this sport have been built and federations and associations have been created for its development and promotion.

Padel has become a social phenomenon, with thousands of amateur and professional players throughout the country. In addition, the broadcast of padel tournaments and competitions on television has contributed to its visibility and dissemination.

Conclusion

Padel, a sport that was born in Mexico in the 1960s, found fertile ground in Spain for its development and expansion. Since its first steps on the Costa del Sol, padel has conquered the hearts of the Spaniards, becoming a highly relevant and constantly growing sporting activity.
